After graduating from Southern Methodist University, Owner Tully Phillips decided to pursue her passion for cooking and attend culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in Austin, Texas. From there, she took an internship at Gramercy Tavern in New York City. During that time, Phillips was diagnosed with gluten intolerance. She explains, “The line of products I had the most difficulty replacing were baked goods. I was able to find products at bakeries offering wheat-free alternatives, but they never tasted the same as the cookies and cupcakes I was used to. After experimenting with different blends of flours in my kitchen at home, I finally came up with recipes for cookies, brownies and cupcakes that everyone can enjoy. And coming from Memphis, we southerners take our desserts very seriously!” Phillips combined her passion for cooking with the newly found knowledge of how to prepare gluten-free baked items and opened her first Tu-Lu’s Bakery in 2010 in the East Village area of New York City. In 2011, after she and her husband moved back to Dallas, she opened her second Tu-Lu’s Bakery in Preston Center.
Phillips continues, “Adding my third location in such a short amount of time is exciting. I didn’t realize how important and rewarding it would be to offer the diet-restricted consumer somewhere to purchase a large selection of baked goods that are gluten-free. In fact, there is nothing more rewarding about my business than having moms tell me how happy Tu-Lu’s makes their child. Children with food restrictions are constantly being told they can’t eat something with their friends or siblings so they always feel left out. It gives me great pleasure knowing that what we create at Tu-Lu’s can make a child feel normal.” Phillips also provides vegan and dairy-free offerings as well as a selection of quiche and Panini sandwiches, special occasion cakes and more.
